Polite ending for basic noun statements
エマです。
ema desu.

sensei wa dare desu ka.

ではありません
Polite way to say “is not”
ミアは先生ではありません。
mia wa sensei dewa arimasen.
Mia is not a teacher.
蓮は先生ではありません。
ren wa sensei dewa arimasen.
Ren is not a teacher.
私は日本人ではありません。
watashi wa nihonjin dewa arimasen.
I am not Japanese.

Polite way to say “was”
昨日は休みでした。
kinou wa yasumi deshita.
Yesterday was a day off.
父は先生でした。
chichi wa sensei deshita.
My father was a teacher.
昨日は雨でした。
kinou wa ame deshita.
It was rainy yesterday.
ではありませんでした
Polite way to say “was not”
彼は先生ではありませんでした。
kare wa sensei dewa arimasen deshita.
He was not a teacher.
建物は病院ではありませんでした。
tatemono wa byouin dewa arimasen deshita.
The building was not a hospital.
昨日は日曜日ではありませんでした。
kinou wa nichiyoubi dewa arimasen deshita.

い-adjective
Describe things and modify nouns
お茶は熱いです。
ocha wa atsui desu.
The tea is hot.
今日は寒いです。
kyou wa samui desu.
It is cold today.
彼女の時計は新しいです。
kanojo no tokei wa atarashii desu.
Her watch is new.
な-adjective
Describe things and add な before nouns
あの人は親切です。
ano hito wa shinsetsu desu.
That person is kind.
田中さんは親切な人です。
tanaka-san wa shinsetsu na hito desu.
Tanaka is a kind person.
この部屋はきれいです。
kono heya wa kirei desu.
This room is clean.
～くないです
Say an adjective is not true
今日は寒くないです。
kyou wa samukunai desu.
Today is not cold.
暑い → 暑くないです
atsui → atsukunai desu
hot → not hot
難しい → 難しくないです
muzukashii → muzukashikunai desu
difficult → not difficult
～かったです
Say how something was before
昨日は寒かったです。
kinou wa samukatta desu.
It was cold yesterday.
楽しい → 楽しかったです
tanoshii → tanoshikatta desu
fun → was fun
高い → 高かったです
takai → takakatta desu
expensive → was expensive
