な-adjective

Describe things and add な before nouns

You’ll be able to use な-adjectives before です, add な when they directly modify nouns, and change the ending to say what is not true or what was.

Illustration of the scene described by This town is quiet.
Read it first

この町まちは静しずかです。

kono machi wa shizuka desu.

What do you think this sentence means?

This town is quiet.

Why it means that

Describe with a な-adjective

な-adjectives describe qualities too, but they behave differently from い-adjectives. Before です, use the adjective directly without な.

Examples

あの人ひとは親切しんせつです。

ano hito wa shinsetsu desu.

That person is kind.

田中たなかさんは親切しんせつな人ひとです。

tanaka-san wa shinsetsu na hito desu.

Tanaka is a kind person.

How it is built

Before です, no な

Use the な-adjective stem followed directly by です in a polite predicate sentence.

な-adjective+です
Examples

この部屋へやはきれいです。

kono heya wa kirei desu.

This room is clean.

田中たなかさんは元気げんきです。

tanaka-san wa genki desu.

Tanaka is well.

この問題もんだいは簡単かんたんです。

kono mondai wa kantan desu.

This problem is easy.

How it is built

Add な before the noun

When a な-adjective directly describes a following noun, put な between the adjective and the noun. The な appears only when the adjective directly modifies a noun in this pattern.

な-adjective+な+Noun
Examples

有名ゆうめいな店みせに行いきます。

yuumei na mise ni ikimasu.

I’m going to a famous shop.

静しずかな町まちです。

shizuka na machi desu.

It is a quiet town.

きれいな公園こうえんです。

kirei na kouen desu.

It is a beautiful park.

元気げんきな子こどもです。

genki na kodomo desu.

It is an energetic child.

簡単かんたんな質問しつもんです。

kantan na shitsumon desu.

It is an easy question.

How it is built

Not true now: ではありません

Swap です for ではありません to deny a な-adjective. Do not add な in front of it — な appears only when the adjective sits directly before a noun.

な-adjective+ではありません
Examples

この町まちは静しずかではありません。

kono machi wa shizuka dewa arimasen.

This town is not quiet.

その部屋へやはきれいではありません。

sono heya wa kirei dewa arimasen.

That room is not clean.

今日きょうは暇ひまではありません。

kyou wa hima dewa arimasen.

I am not free today.

How it is built

In the past: でした

Swap です for でした to describe a past state politely.

な-adjective+でした
Examples

京都きょうとは静しずかでした。

kyouto wa shizuka deshita.

Kyoto was quiet.

パーティーはにぎやかでした。

paatii wa nigiyaka deshita.

The party was lively.

昨日きのうは暇ひまでした。

kinou wa hima deshita.

I was free yesterday.

How it is built

Not true in the past: ではありませんでした

Put ではありませんでした after a な-adjective to deny a past state. It is ではありません with でした on the end.

な-adjective+ではありませんでした
Examples

部屋へやは静しずかではありませんでした。

heya wa shizuka dewa arimasen deshita.

The room was not quiet.

旅行りょこうは簡単かんたんではありませんでした。

ryokou wa kantan dewa arimasen deshita.

The trip was not easy.

昨日きのうは暇ひまではありませんでした。

kinou wa hima dewa arimasen deshita.

I was not free yesterday.

Compare

い-adjective vs な-adjective before a noun

In front of a noun an い-adjective attaches as it is, while a な-adjective needs な first. This is where the two kinds finally behave differently.

  • な-adjective + な + noun

    有名ゆうめいな店みせです。

    yuumei na mise desu.

    It is a famous shop.

    な joins 有名 to 店.

  • い-adjective + noun

    大おおきい犬いぬです。

    ookii inu desu.

    It is a big dog.

大きい needs nothing between it and 犬.
