Group 1: move the final kana to the あ-row + ない
Group 1 dictionary verbs all end in an う-row kana (the -u vowel sound: う, く, ぐ, す, つ, ぬ, ぶ, む, る). To form the plain negative, change that final kana to its matching partner in the あ-row (the -a vowel sound: わ, か, が, さ, た, な, ば, ま, ら) and add ない. Note that verbs ending in う change to わ (not あ) to avoid two vowels in a row.
