父ちちは日曜日にちようびに料理りょうりすることがあります。

chichi wa nichiyoubi ni ryouri suru koto ga arimasu.

What do you think this sentence means?

My father sometimes cooks on Sundays.

Why it means that

Say something happens sometimes

Dictionary-form verb + ことがある describes an occasional event or habit. It differs from the N5 past-form pattern meaning experience at least once.

Example

朝ご飯あさごはんを食たべないことがあります。

asagohan o tabenai koto ga arimasu.

I sometimes skip breakfast.

How it is built

Form and use ~ことがある (occasional action)

Use 遅おくれることがある for sometimes being late and 食たべないことがある for sometimes not eating. A preceding た-form normally changes this to an experience statement.
