~ほど~ない

Not as much as something else

You'll be able to compare two things and say that one does not reach the other's degree.

Illustration of the scene described by Mei is not as tall as Ren.
Read it first

芽衣めいは蓮れんほど背せが高たかくありません。

mei wa ren hodo se ga takaku arimasen.

What do you think this sentence means?

Mei is not as tall as Ren.

Why it means that

Say one thing is not as much as another

AはBほど~ない says A does not reach B’s degree of the quality. The item before ほど is the higher comparison standard.

Example

今日きょうは昨日きのうほど寒さむくないです。

kyou wa kinou hodo samukunai desu.

Today is not as cold as yesterday.

How it is built

Form and use ~ほど~ない

Use a negative ending such as 高たかくない or 上手じょうずではない. Reversing A and B reverses the comparison. It need not say A has none of the quality.
