Regarding or concerning a topic

～に関かんして means “regarding” or “concerning.” It is a formal way to identify the topic of a discussion, explanation, report, or action.

Examples

この計画けいかくに関かんして、何なにか質問しつもんはありますか。

kono keikaku ni kanshite, nanika shitsumon wa arimasu ka.

Do you have any questions regarding this plan?

事故じこに関かんするニュースを見みました。

jiko ni kansuru nyuusu o mimashita.

I saw the news about the accident.

How it is built

Choose the form by what follows

Use noun + に関かんして before a verb or clause. Use noun + に関かんする directly before another noun, as in 環境かんきょうに関かんする本ほん (“a book about the environment”).

Example

留学りゅうがくに関かんする情報じょうほうを集あつめています。

ryuugaku ni kansuru jouhou o atsumete imasu.

I am collecting information related to studying abroad.

～について vs ～に関して

Both mark what something is about. ～について is the everyday choice; ～に関かんして says the same thing more formally and is typical of notices, meetings, and reports.

    新あたらしい規則きそくについて説明せつめいします。

    atarashii kisoku ni tsuite setsumei shimasu.

    I will explain the new rules.

    Neutral; fine in conversation or in class.

  • ～に関して, regarding

    新あたらしい規則きそくに関かんして説明せつめいします。

    atarashii kisoku ni kanshite setsumei shimasu.

    I will give an explanation regarding the new rules.

    Formal; sounds like an announcement at work or school.

Examples

道路どうろ工事こうじに関かんするお問とい合あわせは、市役所しやくしょまでお願ねがいします。

douro kouji ni kansuru otoiawase wa, shiyakusho made onegai shimasu.

Please direct any inquiries regarding the road construction to City Hall.

来月らいげつから、社員しゃいんの服装ふくそうに関かんする決きまりが変かわります。

raigetsu kara, shain no fukusou ni kansuru kimari ga kawarimasu.

From next month, the rules regarding employee dress will change.

手術しゅじゅつに関かんして不安ふあんなことがあれば、遠慮えんりょなく看護師かんごしにお聞ききください。
