Mark what someone says or thinks
Use と after quoted content before verbs such as 言う and 思う. The quote can be the exact words someone said or a plain-form clause reporting the content.
田中さんは「また明日」と言いました。
tanaka-san wa "mata ashita" to iimashita.
Tanaka said, “See you tomorrow.”
Direct quote + と言う
Put the exact quoted words in Japanese quotation marks, add と, then a speaking verb such as 言う.
先生は「始めましょう」と言いました。
sensei wa "hajimemashou" to iimashita.
The teacher said, “Let’s begin.”
ミアは「ありがとう」と言いました。
mia wa "arigatou" to iimashita.
Mia said, “Thank you.”
母は「早く帰ってきて」と言いました。
haha wa "hayaku kaette kite" to iimashita.
My mother said, “Come home early.”
Reported clause with verbs and い-adjectives
Use a plain verb or い-adjective clause before と言う or と思う.
田中さんは明日来ると言いました。
tanaka-san wa ashita kuru to iimashita.
Tanaka said that he will come tomorrow.
この本は面白いと思います。
kono hon wa omoshiroi to omoimasu.
I think this book is interesting.

Reported clause with nouns and な-adjectives
Use だ before と after a plain affirmative noun or な-adjective.
彼は学生だと思います。
kare wa gakusei da to omoimasu.
I think he is a student.
この町は静かだと思います。
kono machi wa shizuka da to omoimasu.
I think this town is quiet.
田中さんは休みだと言いました。
tanaka-san wa yasumi da to iimashita.
Tanaka said that he is off today.
