それから

And then: the next thing after that

You’ll be able to say what came next in a sequence, and to add one more item to what you have already asked for.

Illustration of the scene described by I went to the bank. After that, I did some shopping.
Read it first

ginkou e ikimashita. sorekara, kaimono o shimashita.

What do you think this sentence means?

I went to the bank. After that, I did some shopping.

Why it means that

Say what came after that

それから means “after that.” It opens a new sentence and places its action later in time than the one before, so a story or a plan moves forward one step at a time.

It also adds one more item when you are ordering or listing things, close to “and also.”

Example

shukudai o shimashita. sorekara, terebi o mimashita.

I did my homework. After that, I watched TV.

How it is built

Sentence.

Finish the first sentence, then open the next step with それから and a comma.

How it is built

それから for one more item

When you are ordering or listing things, それから adds the next item to what you have already named.

Compare

Both add a second sentence. そして simply adds — one more quality, or one more thing that happened. それから is about order in time: what it introduces comes after what came before it.

  • それから, after that

shukudai o shimashita. sorekara, terebi o mimashita.

I did my homework. After that, I watched TV.

The homework finishes first, and the television follows it.

  • そして, and also

kono heya wa hiroi desu. soshite, akarui desu.

This room is spacious. And it is bright.

Nothing happens in order here, so それから would not fit.
