Compare

から for a starting point vs から for a reason

After a noun, から marks where or when something starts. To give a noun as a reason, use だから or ですから to make it a clause.

  • から, because

    kuji desu kara, nemasu.

Because it’s nine o’clock, I’m going to bed.

ですから turns the noun into a reason clause (“because it is 9:00”).

  • から, from

    kuji kara benkyou shimasu.

    I’ll study from nine o’clock.

Direct から after a noun marks when an action begins (“from 9:00”).

Examples

kyou wa atsui kara, mado o akemasu.

Because it is hot today, I will open the window.

onaka ga suita kara, hirugohan o tabemasu.

Because I am hungry, I will eat lunch.

jikan ga nai kara, takushii de ikimasu.

Because I do not have time, I will take a taxi.
