~わけではない・~というわけではない

It does not mean that the whole statement is true

You’ll be able to reject an overly broad interpretation without denying every part of what was said.

Illustration of the scene described by It's not that I can't swim, but the river water is too cold.
Read it first

泳およげないわけではないが、川かわの水みずが冷つめたすぎます。

oyogenai wake dewa nai ga, kawa no mizu ga tsumetasugimasu.

What do you think this sentence means?

It's not that I can't swim, but the river water is too cold.

Why it means that

Partially negate a statement or assumption

~わけではない (or ~というわけではない) denies a sweeping generalization or assumption ("it doesn't mean that...", "it is not necessarily the case that...", clarifying that a statement is not 100% true).

Examples

毎日まいにち料理りょうりをするわけではない。

mainichi ryouri o suru wake dewa nai.

It’s not as if I cook every day.

お金かねがあるから幸しあわせだというわけではない。

okane ga aru kara shiawase da to iu wake dewa nai.

Having money does not necessarily mean you are happy.

How it is built

Attach わけではない to a plain clause

Attach わけではない or というわけではない to the plain form of verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives (na-adj + なわけではない), or nouns (noun + の/な/であるわけではない).

plain clause+わけではない/というわけではない
Example

高価こうかなものが必かならずしも良よいものだというわけではない。

kouka na mono ga kanarazushimo yoi mono da to iu wake dewa nai.

Expensive items are not necessarily good items.

Compare

~わけではない vs ~わけがない

~わけではない denies only part of an idea (“it’s not that…”). ~わけがない denies it completely (“there’s no way…”).

  • ~わけではない, it’s not that

    彼かれのことが嫌きらいなわけではない。

kare no koto ga kirai na wake dewa nai.

It’s not that I dislike him.

Softens a wrong assumption; there may still be a reason for distance.

  • ~わけがない, there’s no way

    彼かれのことが嫌きらいなわけがない。

kare no koto ga kirai na wake ga nai.

There’s no way I could dislike him.

    Rejects the idea completely.
