What do you think this sentence means?

Only after getting into the hot spring did I understand how good it feels.

Why it means that

Only after an experience

~て初はじめて means that a realization, feeling, or result first becomes possible only after doing an action. The preceding action itself does not have to be a first-time experience.

Examples

病気びょうきになって初はじめて、健康けんこうの大切たいせつさがわかりました。

byouki ni natte hajimete, kenkou no taisetsusa ga wakarimashita.

iwarete hajimete, machigai ni ki ga tsukimashita.

How it is built

Complete the required experience first

Attach ~て初はじめて to the て-form. The main clause normally contains a discovery, understanding, or result that becomes true after that experience.

Verb て-form+初めて+first possible realization or result
Example

子こどもを育そだてて初はじめて、親おやの気持きもちがわかりました。

kodomo o sodatete hajimete, oya no kimochi ga wakarimashita.

Only after raising a child did I understand a parent’s feelings.

Compare

~てから vs ~て初めて
